RICHMOND, VA. (AP) - A new statewide poll confirms that University of Virginia president Teresa Sullivan's firing and her subsequent rehiring after angry protests was a public relations debacle for the school's governing board.

The Quinnipiac University Poll shows that 47 percent of 1,673 registered Virginia voters surveyed from July 10 through 16 supported Sullivan's reinstatement by a chastened U.Va. Board of Visitors, two weeks after it abruptly fired her last month. Only 7 percent disapproved.

Forty-five percent were undecided or knew too little about the issue. Far more respondents viewed Sullivan favorably than viewed the board rector, Helen Dragas, favorably.

The poll also showed that by almost a 2-to-1 ratio, Virginians support a harsh anti-immigration law similar to Arizona's. By almost the same proportion, respondents said they'd welcome a similar law in Virginia.
