UPDATE: All lanes of southbound I-95 in Richmond have reopened. Some residual backups are possible.
--------------
RICHMOND, VA- Drivers should expect major delays on I-95 south, as crews continue to complete restoration work. VDOT said the work was expected to continue past 10 a.m. Thursday.
The right and center lanes of I-95 south will remain closed at Lombardy Street (mile marker 77) to allow crews to complete critical work at the Lombardy Street bridge. Drivers should use the left travel lane.
Work is expected to continue through morning rush hour. Drivers should expect major delays.
Local traffic is encouraged to use Route 1 south to avoid the area. Through travelers should use I-295 south.
Crews were demolishing a pier cap overnight under the Lombardy Street bridge and encountered problems removing the section.
Temporary supports are in place to carry traffic; however, these supports are not designed to carry all lanes of traffic and an existing pier cap. Traffic has to remain in one lane over the bridge for driver safety. All critical work is being done under the bridge, therefore I-95 drivers will not see crews working on top of the bridge.
Once the existing pier cap is removed, the right and center lanes will reopened.
