CHESAPEAKE, VA. (AP) - A judge in southeastern Virginia has sentenced a man to 30 days in jail for strangling his cat.
The 27-year-old defendant, Angelo Michael Stango, was found guilty Friday in Chesapeake of misdemeanor animal cruelty.
Circuit Judge Thomas Forehand sentenced Stango to one year but suspended 11 months of the sentence.
The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reports that Stango's girlfriend said he grabbed the cat by its throat, walked into the woods and twisted its neck. The incident occurred in October.
Stango maintained he released the once-feral cat into the woods.
At his sentencing, Stango said he did not want the incident to bring "any disrespect" to the Marine Corps, in which he served.
