RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The family of a man who spent more than 15 years in seclusion at a Virginia psychiatric hospital is suing the hospital, several physicians and the state, claiming he was unconstitutionally kept in segregation and denied adequate medical care before his death in 2009.

Cesar Chumil died of cancer weeks after being transferred to a northern Virginia mental health facility. His family had fought for years to get him transferred from Western State Hospital in Staunton, where he was confined to a three-room suite for 15 years because staff said he was too dangerous to be around other patients.

The family seeks more than $100 million in the lawsuit filed in Charlottesville Circuit Court.
A spokeswoman for the state agency overseeing the hospital said she couldn't comment on pending litigation.
