Richmond, VA—The Better Business Bureau Serving Central Virginia is warning consumers to be wary of a scam, after receiving multiple reports of false emails claiming to offer free Visa gift cards.

Consumers say they've received emails which appear to be from local employers, including the City of Richmond School Board, the Better Business Bureau and a charity. The emails say that they recipient has won a $1000 Visa gift card free of charge, and instruct them to visit a website, "www.rewards2012.com" to claim the card. The emails appear official, as they are signed by "Rachel in Customer Service at Employee Benefits Center, LLC." However, if a recipient clicks the link to the website, malware attempts to download onto their computer.

Tom Gallagher, President and CEO of the Central Virginia Better Business Bureau, warns consumers: "Be on the alert and beware of offers for free gift cards. Before you click on any links within email messages, make sure you know the sender and that you are getting the proper information."
