PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) - A former Petersburg city councilman and pastor who served 20 years behind bars for sex crimes won't be returned to prison for violating conditions of his parole.
Clyde L. Johnson Sr. was released on mandatory parole in 2007. His supervision was set to end Oct. 12. However, he was rearrested and jailed June 1 on a charge of violating his parole. He was released Monday.
Johnson could have been sent back to prison, but the Richmond Times Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/PYzrmT ) that the Virginia Parole Board instead extended his supervision to Oct. 12, 2017.
Parole board administrator Joan Wade said Johnson's violation involved failing to follow his parole officer's instructions.
The 77-year-old Johnson was convicted in 1987 on 15 felony sex crimes involving five girls between 10 and 16.
