Mom In Chalk Drawing Incident Given Community Service

UPDATE: Susan Mortensen was asked by a judge in court Tuesday to complete community service in response to charges that she let her child make a chalk drawing on a rock at Belle Isle.

Mortensen was originally charged with destruction of property, but that charge was amended to vandalism. In court Tuesday, the judge asked her to complete 50 hours of community service.

If she completes the service, all charges and fines against her could be dropped. She is expected to report back to court in January 2013.

RICHMOND, VA—A local mother ticketed by police after her child created a chalk drawing is expected to appear in court Tuesday.

Susan Mortensen will contest a ticket given to her back in March by a Richmond Police officer when Mortensen allowed her daughter to create a chalk drawing on a rock at Belle Isle.

Mortensen says the chalk was bio-degradable and made with rock minerals.

Along with the $325 ticket, Mortensen was also banned from all Richmond City parks.

Police have not commented on the case.

The hearing in set to begin at 9 a.m.
