NORFOLK, VA. (AP) - Financial donations to the University of Virginia surged after the reinstatement of a popular president who was ousted for a time in June.
Figures provided to The Associated Press show that giving dropped in half after Teresa A. Sullivan's forced resignation as U.Va. president on June 10. Following an outcry of support from faculty, students and alumni, she was reinstated June 26. Following her reinstatement, donations doubled.
In total, the university received $44.4 million in cash and pledges in June. The university says that's the best June for fundraising for the school since 2008.
Sullivan is the eighth president and first woman to head the prestigious public university founded by Thomas Jefferson. Board members who orchestrated her ouster had criticized her for not doing enough to face financial challenges.
