Firefighters Leave WTC Site After False Alarm

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - Firefighters are leaving a World Trade Center construction site after they were summoned by a report of a fire that turned out to be someone welding.

The fire department says it received a report of a fire on the 88th floor of One World Trade Center at ground zero shortly before 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the site, said the fire report was called in by a member of the public. He says it was believed to be a false alarm.

Last week at the site, a steel beam signed by President Barack Obama was lifted into place at the top of the 104-story skyscraper that's being built to replace the twin towers destroyed in the Sept. 11 attacks.
