WILLIAMSBURG, VA. (AP) - Archaeologists at the College of William and Mary have unearthed the remnants of a Civil War encampment by Union troops on their campus.

Federal troops took over the campus following a battle in Williamsburg in 1862 and remained there until the war came to an end. That resulted in an area southeast of the town being excluded from Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves in areas under open rebellion.

Joe Jones, director of the William and Mary Center for Archaeological Research, says his team has found the earthwork remnants of what was a defensive fence at the tip of the campus, next to downtown Williamsburg. They've also found the remains of a well dug and later covered over by Union troops, as well as other Civil War artifacts.
