UPDATE: Police confirm that the investigation of a 19-year-old man's death after being hit by a train in Amelia is ongoing. Officers are investigating the case as a suicide.

Amelia, VA—A teenage male was struck by a train in Amelia County Saturday morning, and later succumbed to his injuries at VCU Medical Center.

At approximately 9:17 AM, Virginia State Police responded to reports of a person being hit by a train near Goodes Bridge Road.

Upon arrival, police and rescue teams worked to save the 19-year-old male victim, who had been lying down on the tracks when a Norfolk and Souther freight train pulling a heavy load struck him.

The victim was transported to VCU Medical Center by ambulance with serious, life-threatening injuries. He later died at the hospital.

The train's conductors reported that the train consisted of three engines, and was pulling 53 cars when it approached the victim; they were unable to stop the train in time.
