PRINCE GEORGE, Va. (AP) - Construction is nearly complete on an advanced manufacturing research center in Prince George County.
Officials with the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing say the 60,000-square-foot facility is expected to open in early September. They are touting it as a way to create a high-tech manufacturing hub.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/OT2vwA) that the center will do research for a group of manufacturing companies under a partnership with Virginia Tech, Virginia State University and the University of Virginia.
Eight manufacturers have joined a consortium that will support the center's research. They include Rolls-Royce, Newport News Shipbuilding and Siemens. Others are expected to join soon.
The goal is to do nearly $20 million worth of research a year for the companies in the partnership. The center will eventually employ about 60 people.
