POWHATAN, VA- Police have released the name of the man killed in a wreck on Route 288 Monday afternoon.

James T. Fowler Jr., 46, of Sandston, died in the two vehicle wreck on Route 288 just south of Huguenot Trail, police said Monday.

Fowler was traveling southbound on Route 288 in a 2008 Jeep Rubicon when he crossed the grassy median and stuck an oncoming tractor trailer head-on, police said.

The tractor trailer, which was hauling lumber, then ran off the right side of the road, traveled down on embankment and then caught fire.

The driver of the tractor trailer, Donald E. Coleman, 39, of McKenney, suffered serious non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Chippenham Medical Center, police said.

Fowler was wearing his seat belt, according to police.

The crash happened at 10:53 AM near the Huguenot Trail exit, near the Powhatan/Chesterfield County line. All lanes of Route 288 at Route 60 were closed as crews worked to clear the scene.
