HAMPTON, VA. (AP) - The large off-white canopy that the military once used to inspect vehicles entering Fort Monroe in Hampton is being taken down.
The Fort Monroe Authority says a Virginia Beach-based contractor is scheduled to dismantle the structure this week.
The Daily Press reports that it's the first project on Fort Monroe to either build or demolish any structures since the military deactivated the post last year and the national monument was created on portions of the property.
Fort Monroe was the third-oldest U.S. Army post in continuous active service until it closed. The fort at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay includes land where the first slaves were brought into North America and where Confederate President Jefferson Davis was once imprisoned following the Civil War.
