Geico Sponsors "Safe Phone Zones" At VA Rest Stops

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Pennsylvania firm has been awarded the contract to provide vending services at Virginia's 42 Interstate highway rest stops.

CRH Catering Co., a concessionaire based in Connellsville, Pa., was introduced at a news conference at a rest stop off Interstate 64 between Richmond and Williamsburg on Thursday. CRH has offices in Richmond and Norfolk.

The three-year contract requires CRH to generate about $2 million a year in revenues for the Virginia Department of Transportation.

It's part of Gov. Bob McDonnell's initiative to have rest stops pay part of the costs of their operation.

VDOT also introduced a new sponsorship by insurance giant GEICO of new "safe phone zones" at rest stops, places where motorists can park and use their mobile devices to call, text or use other smart phone applications.
