Officials with Chesterfield Schools said Thursday they are working with parents after several claims of school bus overcrowding.

8News has been contacted by parents of students attending both Tomahawk Creek and Robious Middle Schools, concerned about too many children riding on the bus. In some cases, students were made to sit in the aisles if seats were already taken.

In a statement, Chesterfield school officials said "The safety and security of our students is a top priority and in the first week of school we will be making adjustments to routes as needed and as quickly as possible."

Spokesperson Shawn Smith also stressed that school divisions have, per state law, 30 days after school starts to make necessary changes to bus routes to help alleviate overcrowding.
