Midlothian Man Gets 1.5 Year Sentence For Tax Evasion

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A suburban Richmond landscaping executive has been sentenced to a year-and-a-half in federal prison for tax evasion.

Mark Holpe of Midlothian also was fined $40,000 Thursday in U.S. District Court. He pleaded guilty to evading employment taxes in April.

According to federal prosecutors, Holpe was president of Nature's Way Landscaping Inc. before selling a portion of the business in 2007 and becoming the company's treasurer. The company paid employment taxes on one group of 12 employees, but evaded about $326,000 in taxes on another group of 30 who were paid in cash.
