RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The U.S. Department of Education has named nine schools in Virginia as 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools.

The department announced the awards Friday for 269 schools nationwide.

The schools are Arlington Traditional Elementary School; Clearbrook Elementary School in Roanoke, Grundy High School, Holy Cross Academy in Fredericksburg, Norfolk Highlands Primary School in Chesapeake, Nuckols Farm Elementary School in Henrico, St. Edward-Epiphany School in Richmond, South River Elementary School in Grottoes, and West Point High School.

The program recognizes public and private elementary, middle and high schools that are either high performing or have raised student achievement to high levels, particularly for disadvantaged students.

The schools will be recognized at a ceremony in November in Washington, D.C.

The Blue Ribbon program began in 1982.
