GLADE SPRING, VA. (AP) - Virginia's pumpkin crop is shaping up to be a good one.
The big orange squash is already being harvested and extension agent Allen Straw has pronounced the season "decent." Straw said the heat and dry conditions this summer may result in some variations in yield from one region of the state to another.
Pumpkins are cultivated on more than 2,000 acres in Virginia. They are typically planted in late spring or early summer and are harvested in September through October as a harbinger of autumn.
