Mother, Son Killed In Apparent Spotsylvania Murder/Suicide

Posted: Updated:

Spotsylvania, VA—A man shot and killed his mother and wounded his sister before turning the gun on himself in Spotsylvania County Monday afternoon.

Spotsylvania Sheriff's officials responded to a residence on South McClaws Drive, just off Route 3 near Fredericksburg.

Officers say 43-year-old David Anderson shot his sister, 51-year-old Laura Reeves, in the arm and stomach.

Reeves fled to neighbors for help, despite being wounded. It appears that Anderson followed her.

When Anderson's mother, 75-year-old Jean Anderson, came outside, David fatally shot her, before killing himself.

Police recovered two weapons from the scene of the crime, a rifle and a handgun.

There have been no previous incidents in this area, and neighbors say they did not hear arguing or yelling before the shooting.

All of the family members, including Reeve's husband lived in the same house before the incident.

Captain Mike Harvey of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office told 8News that an investigation of this incident will continue. "Obviously we're going to be piecing the timeline together to try to figure out exactly what's going on with this family," he said.

As of 11:00 PM Monday evening, Laura Reeves was recovering in the hospital, and her condition was deemed "stable."
