CHESAPEAKE, VA. (AP) - The Hampton Roads Executive Airport in Chesapeake is receiving $4 million in Federal Aviation Administration grants

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced the funding on Monday.

LaHood says the funding will help improve the infrastructure of Virginia's airports and will keep aircraft moving safely and efficiently through the state.

Construction for Hampton Roads Executive Airport began in 2010 and is expected to be completed in late fall 2015. The total cost of the five-phase project is $25 million.

The FAA funding will help pay for a new runway to replace the existing runway that will be converted to a parallel taxiway when the new runway is completed. Officials say the current runway cannot accommodate all types of aircraft using the airport.
