RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Richmond is being sued by eight employees who claim the city hasn't addressed complaints that one of its departments discriminates against black workers.
The lawsuit also alleges that the city hasn't prevented retaliation against workers who made the complaints about the Department of Public Utilities.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/S1z7th ) says eight pipefitters filed the lawsuit last week in federal court. It seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages. They are among 12 employees who filed a discrimination complaint with the city Department of Human Resources in March 2011.
The complaint alleged that white employees are favored in hiring and promotion. It also claimed that white employees and supervisors openly use racial epithets.
A spokeswoman for Mayor Dwight C. Jones declined to comment because city officials haven't seen the lawsuit.
