RICHMOND, VA—Charges against 26 of 30 abortion rights protesters arrested in March after refusing to leave the steps of the Virginia Capitol during a rally have been dismissed.
Trespassing charges against 26 of the 30 people arrested were dropped after they performed 25 hours of community service.
In April, Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Colette McEachin offered to drop trespassing charges against the 17 women and 13 men if they perform community service with a "legitimate nonprofit" organization.
The protesters were arrested March 3 during a rally against Republican-backed bills to require ultrasounds before abortions, among other anti-abortion measures.
Each was charged with a one count of misdemeanor trespassing and one count of misdemeanor unlawful assembly. In May, McEachin said she would drop the unlawful assembly charges against, because it would be difficult to prove.
