"Dancing With the Stars" Recap: The All-Stars Are Back With The Mirror Ball Trophy in Mind
The glitz, the glamour, the barely there dresses, non-buttoned shirts, and the spray-on tans. That's right ballroom fans, Dancing With the Stars is back, and it is the much anticipated All-Star season! Head Judge Len Goodman let it be known right away that they are going to expect "good to be great" this year, because they have all been here before. With an adjustment made in the scoring this year, judges can award half points, will Len get less boo's? How long before Maks pinches newly minted Emmy winner Tom Bergeron? We expect amazing this year, so dazzle us people!
First up is season four runner-up Joey Fatone and his former partner Kym Johnson, who danced a cha-cha-cha to Michael Jackson's "PYT". There is no doubt that the former ‘N Sync boy band member can work a stage and it was a great way to start the All-Star show. Judges warned him to "watch your footwork."
Scores: Carrie Ann—6.5 Len—7 Bruno—7 Total—20.5
Next on the floor is season 8 champion Shawn Johnson, and new partner Derek Hough. Her background allows for amazing lines, and they showed in this foxtrot. It was a good, but simple routine. Len was less impressed, saying, "it didn't feel like a foxtrot."
Scores: Carrie Ann—8 Len—6.5 Bruno—7.5 Total—22.5
Season 5 winner Helio Castroneves is back! Paired with new partner Chelsie Hightower, they danced a charming foxtrot. He is such a nice guy, and that comes across the screen so well. The few flaws in the routine, which all the judges noted, did not detract from the gracefulness of it.
Scores: Carrie Ann—7 Len—7.5 Bruno—7 Total—21.5
Pam Anderson from season 10 is paired with new partner Tristan MacManus. Pam is one of two this year that has never been to the finals, I am not sure that is going to change. She danced a cha-cha-cha and she made it through, but not a lot of actual dancing took place. Len commended her for "not falling over." Ouch. I will miss Tristan.
Scores: Carrie Ann—5.5 Len—5.5 Bruno—6 Total—17
Season 8 third place finisher Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani are back together again! They did a great foxtrot to "Sweet Charity" and Tony did a little fist pump at the end to celebrate. Melissa looks great, her lines were fantastic; Bruno even used the word "vertiginous." You have to love Bruno, right!
Scores: Carrie Ann—7 Len—7 Bruno—7 Total—21
Season 4 champ Apolo Anton Ohno and new partner Karina Smirnoff danced a LMFAO "Party Rock Anthem" cha-cha-cha. The costumes were colorful, the dance was fun, and the audience got up on their feet! Carrie Ann said that he just got, "3000x more sexy!"
Scores: Carrie Ann—7.5 Len—7 Bruno-- 7.5 Total--22
With his French accent and suave sophistication, season 8 runner-up Gilles Marini returns with new partner Peta Murgatroyd. If their first dance is any indication, the others better be nervous. They danced a foxtrot, Peta looked like Marilyn Monroe, it was smooth, and Gilles was old style Hollywood. Glamour. Glitz. Panache. My favorite of the night.
Scores: Carrie Anne—8 Len—8 Bruno—8 Total—24
Season 11 finalist Bristol Palin is back with partner Mark Ballas and they danced a cha-cha-cha. Carrie Ann voted her the most improved. While I agree that she is better than she was, she still looked like a deer caught in the headlights to me. Not as bad as Pam, but, not as good as the others.
Scores: Carrie Ann—6.5 Len—6.5 Bruno—6.5 Total—19.5
Season 2 winner Drew Lachey is now partnered with Anna Trebunskaya. Drew has been one of my favorites since he and Cheryl danced "Ride a Cowboy," remember that? He and Anna danced a foxtrot, and I admit that I was a little disappointed. I hope that pairing him with Anna wasn't a mistake, she is taller than him, and they just don't seem to go together.
Scores: Carrie Ann—7 Len—7 Bruno—7.5 Total—21.5
Kelly Monaco was Season 1 champ when DWTS was in its infancy, and only six weeks long, and now she is back with new partner Val Chmerkovskiy. Watching the two of them almost shouldn't be allowed on prime time TV, can you say chemistry?! It paid off with their cha-cha-cha, it was hot!
Scores: Carrie Ann—7 Len—7 Bruno—7.5 Total—21.5
And, they're back! Kirstie Alley and Maks Chmerkovskiy, season 12 runners-up and the pair for the flair. One minute into rehearsal she was joking about her weight, and he was looking annoyed. Perfect. However, their foxtrot was not exciting and they have a lot of work to do if they want to stick around and keep us entertained.
Scores: Carrie Ann—6.5 Len—6 Bruno—6.5 Total—19
Last up were season three winners Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke (on a side note, Anna would have been a better pairing with Emmitt, with Cheryl with Gilles or Drew). However, Twinkle Toes looks like he never left the dance floor! He and Cheryl burned up their cha-cha-cha, and for a big football player, that man can get down, and have fun doing it! He made it look like a Saturday night, not a competition. It's on!
Scores: Carrie Ann—8 Len—8.5 Bruno—8 Total—24.5
I think that Pam is going home tonight, and my bottom three are, Pam, Bristol, and Kirstie. My top three this week are Gilles, Emmitt, and Sabrina. What about you? Who do you think are going home? Who impressed you the most? Who disappointed you? Thanks for reading and remember results tonight at 8:00pm.
