Richmond, VA—An inmate was found dead at the Richmond City Jail Thursday, confirms Sheriff C. T. Woody.
62-year-old Charles Preston Mitchell turned himself in to VCU Police on an outstanding warrant for distribution of heroin. After he was placed under arrest, VCU Police transported Mitchell to VCU Medical Center for unknown medical reasons.
After he was released from the VCU Medical Center, police say Mitchell was transported to the Jail Annex. He refused process, and refused treatment by medical staff. He also refused to answer questions about his medical condition.
The jail medical staff placed him in a single cell, rather than community housing.
On Thursday morning, when Sheriff's deputies came to wake Mitchell, they found him unresponsive in his cell. The deputies called a medical emergency; jail medical personnel and Richmond Ambulance Authority responded and pronounced the inmate dead.
An autopsy by the Richmond Medical Examiner's Office is scheduled for Thursday evening. Police say there were no signs of foul play, but are conducting an investigation of the death.
