Proposed Smoking Ban Wins Radford Students' Support

Posted: Updated:

RADFORD, Va. (AP) - A proposed on-campus smoking ban at Radford University has narrowly won support from students.

The university says the proposed ban was favored by 51.4 percent of students who voted during last week's elections held by the Student Government Association. A record 1,546 students cast ballots during the three-day voting period.

Smoking currently is allowed 25 feet away from campus buildings. But it's banned inside buildings.

The university says in a news release that the proposed smoking ban will go to the Student Affairs Executive Council for consideration.

Fifty-five percent of the students voted against increasing the campus sustainability fee by $5. The fee supports green initiatives.
