Hopewell, VA--An accidental release of chemicals from the Honeywell plant caused an orange cloud to hover in the air Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:00 PM. Hopewell City alert alarms were sounded, but no emergency crews were dispatched. As of 5:20 PM, Hopewell EMS had not received a single call for assistance in connection with the chemical release.
While numerous 8News viewers were alarmed by the smoke, officials say no one was ever in any danger after the chemical release.
A statement from Honeywell officials explains the situation:
This afternoon at approximately 4:00 p.m., Honeywell's Hopewell facility experienced a release of nitrogen oxide (NOx), a gas that is generated from the plant's manufacturing process and which the facility emits within permitted levels. There were no injuries, but as per our procedures, the plant activated its emergency response measures and notified local emergency responders. Emissions of NOx are back within permitted levels and Honeywell is investigating the incident.
