RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and Democratic challenger Wayne Powell squared off for a lively debate Monday evening.

Before a Virginia Chamber of Commerce audience Monday night, Cantor said lower taxes and reduced regulations are the best formula for creating jobs and getting the economy on track. He also suggested Powell is running a campaign based on personal attacks because he lacks ideas.

Powell said that as a congressional leader, Cantor is responsible for the nation's economic problems. He portrayed the six-term incumbent as beholden to corporate interests that have heavily contributed to the Republican's campaign.

Powell is making his first run for public office in Virginia's strongly Republican 7th District.
