CHESTERFIELD, VA—A mother has been arrested after police say the woman was driving while intoxicated with her child in the car.

Velisa C. Pierce, 38, was arrested and charged with driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated. She was also charged with abuse and neglect of a child.

Officers stopped Pierce on suspicion of DUI around 1:30 a.m. Friday, September 28. The officer performed a field sobriety test, which Peirce was unable to pass, according to police.

The child was not injured and was released to a responsible party, police said.
