RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A new online tool aims to help students figure out how much money they'll make in different careers.

The Virginia Longitudinal Data System was set to go live on Thursday. It's been in the works for about seven years, but it was mandated by legislation passed by the General Assembly this year.

The system tracks by degree programs and schools the post-graduate wage outcomes of more than 836,000 college graduates since 1999.

The system does have its limitations. It only includes graduates working full time in Virginia in positions that must be reported to the Virginia Employment Commission. That means it doesn't count those working for the federal government and the military, as well as self-employed entrepreneurs or those who find jobs outside Virginia.
