State Settles In Case of Boy Who Died At Virginia Clinic

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The state of Virginia is settling a wrongful-death lawsuit filed by the family of a 6-year-old boy who died during treatment at a dental clinic in Richmond.

Records filed in Richmond Circuit Court show the state has agreed to a $100,000 settlement of the suit filed by the family of Jacobi Hill.

Crystal Lewis said her son went into cardiac arrest in May 2011 after undergoing anesthesia while having caps put on several teeth at Virginia Commonwealth University's pediatric dental clinic and died a short time later. The state medical examiner's office says Hill died after suffering an irregular heartbeat caused by the removal of a breathing tube.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that the Virginia Attorney General's Office agreed to resolve the claim, but the state denies any liability.
