Farmville, VA--A fund has been established to help pay the medical expenses of a young woman seriously injured in a Farmville crash on October 14.

Shortly after 6:00 PM on Sunday, October 14, 18-year-old Walker Whalen Smithson was heading north on Route 15 in Farmville, about a quarter mile south of Route 701.

Smithson told officers he fell asleep at the wheel, and awakened as his vehicle crashed head-on into the car of 20-year-old Sara Francis Distler, who was traveling south on the same roadway.

Distler was trapped inside her vehicle, and had to be cut free by rescue crews. Both she and Smithson were transported by helicopter to hospitals. Smithson was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital, Distler was flown to VCU Medical Center for treatment.

Smithson is now in stable condition; Distler is still recovering from her injuries,  and will celebrate her birthday in the hospital on November 6.

Those wishing to help pay for Sara's medical bills may send donations to:

Citizens Bank and Trust Company
P.O. Box 378
210 Carter Street
Crewe, Va. 23930

Please include a note or reference to the "Sara Distler Medical Expense Fund" with your donations.
