RICHMOND, VA. (AP) - Animal protection activists are pushing to phase out the little-known practice of letting loose hunting dogs on foxes in fenced enclosures.

They're expected to show up in large numbers Thursday in Richmond at a meeting of the state Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. A strong turnout of supporters of so-called foxhound training also is expected.

More than three dozen of the fox enclosures are located in Virginia, primarily in the state's Southside region near the North Carolina line. The practice has used thousands of foxes through the years to train foxhounds. Proponents contend the chases are humane, and the foxes enjoy the chase.

Laura Donahue of the state chapter of the Humane Society of the United States says the animal protection group wants the practice phased out in Virginia.
