RICHMOND, VA—Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell declared a state of emergency in Virginia on Friday in preparation of Hurricane Sandy.

The governor's office says all forecasts call for significant impacts to Virginia over the weekend and early next week.

"We are issuing this state of emergency today as a precautionary measure in order to ensure that we are ready for any potential effects of Hurricane Sandy in the Commonwealth," Governor McDonnell said.

McDonnell says the projected long duration of the storm has the potential to produce significant flooding, extensive power outages, as well as snowfall in part of Virginia.

A state of emergency is declared under state law and allows state resources to be made available.

Gov. McDonnell will speak live about the state's preparations ahead of Sandy. Watch it live on WRIC TV8 at 3:00 p.m, or on our website HERE.
