Richmond, VA—As Virginia braces for Sandy, many viewers have asked 8News what items should be included in their family emergency kits. The Virginia Department of Emergency Management includes the following items as essentials for any emergency kit:
Once citizens have established the essential items, these things may be added, as extra safety measures:-Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities-Flashlight and extra batteries-First aid kit-Whistle to signal for help-Prescription medications and eyewear-Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter where you are-Sanitation supplies: moist towelettes, toilet paper, soap and plastic garbage bags
