NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A Louisiana-born artist who now lives in Virginia has won the contest to design the Louisiana duck stamp for 2013.
Ron Louque of Charlottesville painted a mallard pair resting on the roots of an old stump along a wooded bayou. He's now a four-time winner. Guy Crittenden of Richmond, Va., took second place and Dale Pousson of Egan, La., took third.
The annual Louisiana Waterfowl Conservation Stamp has raised money since 1988 for conservation and enhancement of state wetlands and other programs that benefit Louisiana's ducks and geese. This program has generated over $11 million for wetland conservation in Louisiana since 1989.
Until recently, waterfowl hunters had to pay for both a hunting license and a duck stamp. Waterfowl study leader Larry Reynolds says the two were separated in 2010.
