RICHMOND, VA—Police have identified a bicyclist killed Thursday afternoon after he was struck by a box truck in Richmond.

Luther M. Jefferson, 62, of Richmond, was riding a bicycle southbound on Mechanicsville Turnpike when he and a box truck collided near the I-64 off ramp, police said.

Jefferson was taken to VCU Medical Center where he later died, police said. The Medical Examiner will determine the exact cause of death.

A Crash Analysis and Reconstruction Team has completed work at the scene of the wreck, but investigators have several more eyewitness interviews to conduct before they consult with the Commonwealth Attorney's Office regarding possible charges, police said.

The wreck happened just after 3:30 p.m. Thursday. The driver of the box truck was uninjured. He will not be identified unless charges are filed, police said.
