RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Kenyan Kipkoech Ruto has won the Anthem Richmond Marathon.
The 23-year-old finished the Saturday race with a time of 2 hours, 15 minutes and 14 seconds. He finished 40 seconds ahead of 28-year-old runnerup Eric Kirchir of Kenya.
Last year's winner, Kennedy Kemei of Kenya came in third with a time of2:15:55. The 34-year-old had set a race record last year with a time of 2:13:45.
Twenty-seven-year-old Aziza Aliyu of Ethiopia was the women's winner with a time of 2:40:21.
A record of more than 6,000 runners entered the marathon, which benefited from the cancellation last weekend of the New York City Marathon. After that race was canceled in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, more than 800 runners signed up for the Richmond race.
