CHARLES CITY COUNTY, VA—A yellow lab on track to become a therapy dog was shot and killed by a Charles City County Animal Control officer.

Axel, an 18-month-old yellow lab, was shot in the face three times by a Charles City County Animal Control officer, the Charles City County Administrator confirms.

Sharon McGeein, Axel's owner, said she received a call from an Animal Control officer Friday, November 2.

McGeein said the officer told her a complaint had been made by a neighbor who said the dog had chased a 17-year-old boy as he got off the school bus.

McGeein said the officer told her when he responded to the call and later located the dog, the dog was acting aggressive at which point he shot the dog.

The shooting is being investigated by the Virginia State Police and the Charles City County Administrator.
