RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The lights, cameras and action of the film and television industry are having an even bigger impact on Virginia's economy.
According to data being released Thursday, the industry's total economic impact increased 14.5 percent to more than $394 million last year.
And more than 3,815 jobs were attributed to the industry in 2011, compared with about 2,650 jobs in 2010. The industry also contributed nearly $60 million in state and local tax revenue.
Last year, Virginia became a living soundstage to major films, including Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln," which is set to open nationwide on Nov. 16. Others include Clint Eastwood's "J. Edgar" and "Argo," directed by and starring Ben Affleck.
Gov. Bob McDonnell attributes the industry's growth to the state's incentive programs for film production and Virginia's diverse backdrops.
