Richmond, VA--With the holidays fast approaching, many people will be sending packages to friends and family, and receiving them at their homes. But as a recent Richmond incident proved, residents should take caution when leaving packages unattended at their homes.

An unidentified suspect stole the contents of a package Thursday from the front porch of a home located in the 3100 block of East Broad Street. The man was wearing all purple clothing, and can be seen in the above security surveillance video rifling through a box before lifting out its contents and fleeing.

When 8News investigated the incident, a woman who lives in the neighborhood says she isn't surprised by the theft. Thelma Villars believes it's best not to leave packages outside. "I definitely would not have them shipped to me home. I don't really trust leaving anything on my porch," says Villars.

Richmond police are searching for the thief, and ask anyone with information about the incident to call Lt. Daniel Minton at 240-9158 or email him at Daniel.Minton@richmondgov.com.
