RICHMOND, VA—The Washington Redskins will have a training camp in Richmond after the City Council unanimously approved the deal Monday night.
The Richmond City Council approved construction of the summer training camp on a lot behind the Science Museum of Virginia.
There was some debate around the proposed deal because of two proposed expansion sites for the camp's main sponsor, Bon Secours.
One of those sites is at Westhampton School, where neighbors voiced concerns regarding what would become of a popular playground in the area.
Initially, some members of the Richmond City Council were also against the proposal, but last minute negotiations resulted in a unanimous vote Monday.
Bon Secours will sponsor the facility and will lease the old Westhampton School in the West End to be used as a medical facility. In return, the healthcare system agreed to give one million dollars to the Richmond Public Schools over the course of 10 years.
Richmond City Major Dwight Jones released a statement on the outcome of Monday night's meeting saying "The measure that we are moving forward today is precisely the type of outcome that we should be working towards as an outcome of our negotiations. We've worked very hard to reach a consensus and I'm anticipating a favorable outcome."
