NORTON, Va. (AP) - A University of Virginia-Wise football player has been dismissed from the team after being charged with shooting a woman.

School spokeswoman Kathy Still says 21-year-old Melquan Huntley of Newport News was kicked off the team Tuesday, a day after his arrest. His status as a student was being reviewed.

Norton police Capt. Roger Cooke says 18-year-old Jahnae Foster was shot in the head at Huntley's home last Wednesday. She remains hospitalized at Johnson City Medical Center.

Police released few details about the shooting. Huntley, a third-year student who played fullback for the Cavaliers, is charged with shooting in an occupied dwelling and unlawful shooting of a person. He has been released on $50,000 bond. Arraignment is set for Dec. 3. A court official said Huntley hasn't hired a lawyer yet.
