Richmond, VA—Keepers at the Metro Richmond Zoo are investigating, after a tiger attacked and killed another tiger Saturday.
A visitor to the zoo captured the attack on camera. The tigers had been raised together. There had been no problems between the animals before the fatal attack on Saturday.
Although zoo workers raced to the scene of the vicious attack, by the time they reached the animals, one of the tigers was dead. They could not administer a tranquilizer on the attacking tiger, since it takes approximately 20 minutes for the drug to take effect.
The deceased tiger left behind a sister. As 8News crews approached the enclosure where she was held, the animal jumped up and pawed the glass; zoo officials said that this was unusual behavior, and the tiger may be in distress because of her dead brother.
Zoo officials are investigating the incident, but it appears the tigers were playing before it escalated into a fight. Stay with 8News for updates.
