Roseau, Dominica—A University of Virginia student has died in a boating accident in the largest city of Dominica, an island in the Caribbean.
Casey Schulman, a fourth-year student at the University of Virginia, was killed in a recreational boating incident in Roseau, Dominica. Schulman was a participant in the Fall 2012 Semester at Sea Program.
Schulman was traveling with a group of students in a trip not organized by the University of Virginia, or the Semester at Sea program. The Falls Church native was reportedly struck by a boat's propeller.
A commemorative program was held in Schulman's honor Saturday evening aboard the ship on which Schulman was traveling. The ship will depart Dominica at 8:00 PM Sunday evening, and return to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on Friday, December 7, as planned.
Les McCabe, a representative from UVA's Semester at Sea Program submitted the following statement after Schulman's death: "We wish to convey our condolences to Casey's family, her many friends, and those who witnessed the accident. Please join me in keeping the Schulman family in your thoughts at this very difficult time."
