RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Southern Environmental Law Center is joining opponents of Virginia's proposal to use toll revenue to improve Interstate 95.
The group said Tuesday that the proposed toll facility's location in Sussex County would hurt Southside Virginia's economy. It also says the tolls would be a disproportionate burden for low income and minority populations.
Another concern is traffic shifting onto secondary roads to avoid the tolls.
More than a dozen local governments, along with regional government and economic development bodies, also oppose the toll plan.
The Federal Highway Administration is reviewing the state's application to place tolls on I-95.
Projects detailed in the application include replacing or rehabilitating the Courtland Road bridge over I-95 in Prince George County and rebuilding the interchange of I-95, I-85 and U.S. 460 in Petersburg.
