CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - University of Virginia officials say more than 7,000 people are expected to attend the 12th annual Lighting of the Lawn ceremony.
The event at the university's historic Academical Village is set for 7 p.m. Thursday. Workers began stringing more than 4,000 feet of lights in mid-November.
The tradition began in 2001 when fourth-year trustees, who sponsor and host the event, looked for a way to bring the university community together after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. It has been expanded to include fund-raising efforts for community causes. This year, the trustees are raising money for Hope House, a transitional housing program for homeless people in the Charlottesville area.
