GOOCHLAND, VA—The man accused of "savagely beating" a Goochland
County Public Schools teacher in the school's parking lot was arraigned in
court Thursday afternoon.
Uriah Kamal Harris, 29, of the 2900 block of Bywater Drive in Henrico, faces two
felony charges, including aggravated malicious wounding and assault and battery
upon a person protected by a protective order. Harris was denied bond in the Thursday court hearing.
The victim, a female teacher at Goochland
Middle School, was
hospitalized after she was assaulted in the school's parking lot Wednesday
morning, according to Goochland Schools Acting Superintendent Peter Gretz.
Goochland Sheriff's officials said the suspect was "savagely
beating" the teacher. Authorities say Harris threw the woman to the
ground, punched her and smashed her face into the concrete.
She was taken to VCU
Medical Center
with serious head injuries. Detectives are still trying to determine if a knife
was used in the attack.
Harris was taken into custody around 8 a.m., according to the Sheriff's
office, who also said the victim and suspect had previously been in a
relationship.
Witnesses tell 8News the victim was attacked by her ex-boyfriend.
Harris was also charged with possession of a knife on school property and
driving after driving privileges have been revoked, both misdemeanors.
Harris is due back in court Monday.
