ALBERMARLE, VA—A former Lieutenant with the Albemarle County Police Department has been charged with embezzling public funds.
Ernest Allen, 51, of Albermarle County, was charged with one felony count of embezzlement of public funds.
Police said Allen removed $380 from a petty cash fund. The missing money was discovered during a quarterly audit in early December.
Allen was suspended December 6. He repaid the funds and following an investigation resigned December 10.
Allen worked with the police department for more than 27 years and most recently served as a Lieutenant over the Special Operations Division, according to police.
