RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia isn't just for lovers. It's for volunteers, too.

The Peace Corps says Virginia ranks ninth among states in the number of people who volunteer to serve.

The program currently has 303 Virginia residents. No other states from the mid-Atlantic region placed on the top states list.

Regional office manager Chris Gilson says Peace Corps service provides a unique opportunity to live and work to improve the lives of people worldwide, as well as learn new skills.

Volunteer projects relate to agriculture, economic development, education, environment, health and youth development.

The Peace Corps was established 51 years ago by President John F. Kennedy to promote service and understanding around the world.

Since the Corps' founding, more than 7,115 Peace Corps volunteers from Virginia have served in 139 countries.
